In the preface to Lyrical Ballads, Wordsworth defines â€Å"real language of men† as a line or a sequence of lines that are written in â€Å"the language of prose† rather than the poetic metre normally associated with poetry (Preface to Lyrical Ballads n.d.). The third symbol is a â€Å"horned Moon, with one bright star / Within the nether tip† (Coleridge 210 - 211). A moon coupled with a lone star is another omen, the footnotes describe this as â€Å"an omen of impending evil† (Greenblatt 449). By using these symbols Coleridge was letting his reader know that something bad was going to happen in the near future. The two hundred men on the ship died during the night as predicted by the evil omens; â€Å"Four times fifty living men, / †¦ / They dropped down one by one.† (Coleridge 216 219). In line 231, â€Å"[this] body dropt not down†, Coleridge tells the reader that the story teller did not die (Coleridge 231). The notes to the left talk about â€Å"Life-in-Death† and confirm that the sailor is not a spirit; (Greenblatt 449). The seafarer was not allowed to die with his men, instead he is doomed to wander â€Å"from land to land† somewhere between life and death, continually repeating his story (Coleridge 586).
